“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
One of the major sins we find in the Old Testament is that of child sacrifice. We can scarcely comprehend what that entailed. It was the deliberate killing of a child for the purpose of appeasing the gods. It was a pagan practice. It was far removed from God’s Law and intention for the people of Israel. Jeremiah told Judah what God thought of such sins just before Nebuchadnezzar came to destroy them. He said: “For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the LORD. They have set their detestable things in the house that is called by my name, to defile it. And they have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind” (Jer. 7:30, 31; see Jer. 19:5; 32:35). It’s the last part Jeremiah 7:31 that catches our attention. God says, “nor did it come into my mind.” This is human language used by God to demonstrate how vile such sin was. God speaks as if he never thought of it. God removed Judah from the land because of this sin (it was not the only sin). As we know, child sacrifice continues today in the form of abortion. Of course, abortion has always been around. It used to be practiced in secret, but now you can go down the road and get the “murder” done. [Read more…] about Choose Life
